“Perfect Health” by Deepak Chopra M.D. is essentially a primer to the Ayurvedic approach to life and health with emphasis on the mind/body connection, a very good exploration of quantum physics and the realization that on that level we are simply energy. Vibrating nanoparticles with more space than particles. The paradigm of Western medicine is in mind-body separation yet now with practioners of alternative treatments for cancer, it is almost universally agreed that the mind has a significant influence over our health and our ability to recover from such chronic diseases. There are many parallels, some quite widely spread, to this way of thinking.

A new study conducted by the University of Chicago, shows a majority of American doctors believe God or another supernatural power intervenes in their patient's health. Nearly two in five doctors believe religion and spirituality can help prevent bad outcomes such as heart attacks, infections and even death, according to the their nationwide survey of 2,000 physicians. In Larry Clapp’s book, the basis for my documentary, on ‘Alternative Treatments for Prostate Cancer he devotes a significant part to spirituality and its importance in bringing about a change in one’s lifestyle to facilitate the body healing itself.  Bernie Seigel M.D. has espoused similar views in his book Love, Medicine and Miracles. Along those lines, I recently interviewed Eric Robins M.D., a Los Angeles urologist who is becoming well known for his acceptance of healing modalities that expand beyond surgery.

His open mindedness is unusual among urologists. He was co- author of "Your Hands Can Heal You" a primer on pranic healing, a form of energy healing. Dr. Robins has since progressed far beyond the scope of pranic healing to encompass the practice of hypnosis, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT for short--- a form of emotional acupressure) and the Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT). Dr. Robins has found that stress, negative emotions and past traumas are all held in the body, and are the main factors that block the flow of the body's healing energy. Additionally, he observed that when we are experiencing chronic stress, this negatively impacts the function of our immune systems.

He uses both EFT and TAT in his clinic to clear the effects of stress and past traumatic memories, and most importantly his patients literally experience a physiologic shift in their bodies when this is done.  While he does not state that these modalities will cure prostate cancer, he does believe that when we clear our emotional issues and stressors, this dramatically improves our energy level and the function of our immune systems.  Additionally, the entire evolving field of epigenetics shows that our genes do not function autonomously, but rather the genes can be activated or suppressed through changes in the cell's environment.  And a significant factor that activates genes is the biochemical milieu created by our emotional states. So if you are interested in "gene therapy" the best things you can do for yourself are:

1) clear all past traumas that carry a negative charge on them

2) clear any other ongoing stressors or conscious conflicts

3) spend 5 minutes a day writing a gratitude list. We attract into our lives what we focus on.

When we focus on what is going right at the moment (i.e. focusing on what we do want, not on what we don't want), we tend to attract more of those good feelings into our lives. Writing a gratitude list releases lots of beneficial chemicals and neurotransmitters into your system, and gives those cells a positive environmental milieu that may help active the right genes. The bottom line is that on the molecular level, we are all energy. The behavior of cells can be influenced by the type of energy we feed our body. It would not surprise me one iota if 50 or 100 years from now, all medicine will be ‘energy healing’ and accountable on the molecular level.
