No: 17 in a series of articles  - Dr. Julian Kenyon ...

With interviews conducted with 25 US doctors in the can, it was time to take a look at how other countries and medical professionals view and treat prostate cancer. I have heard volumes about how much more open the Germans are to “complementary” and “alternative” treatments and over the years having been exposed to the British medical system I was personally aware of how the alternative options in the UK were heavily closeted.

I lined up three doctors, two in Germany and one in the UK who are particularly well versed in prostate issues as well as conventional and alternative treatments to discuss the trials and tribulations of promoting and offering other options to prostate cancer patients than that for which their government funded national health systems will pay. These three doctors operate their own private clinics.

My first call was to The Dove Clinic and Dr. Julian Kenyon located in the southern picturesque English village of Twyford in Hampshire. Dr Kenyon MD MB ChB., is a surgeon by training, and was also a principle in General Practice. He is Founder-Chairman of the British Medical Acupuncture Society (1980) and Co-Founder of the Centre for the Study of Complementary Medicine in Southampton and London where he worked for many years. He is also Founder/President of the British Society for Integrated Medicine and is an established authority in the field of complementary treatment approaches for a wide range of medical conditions. He has wide experience and training in acupuncture in various forms, homeopathy, environmental and nutritional medicine and cancer immunotherapy.

What is of interest to prostate (and breast) cancer patients is the PhotoDynamic and SonoDynamic Therapy offered by the Dove Clinic, the only facility in the UK to so offer. It is the same system I previously covered in my visit to the Opal Clinic in Australia. Unlike the Opal Clinic, Dr. Kenyon combines this with “on-site” consultation for facilitating the body's immune system in the healing process. This includes but is not limited to diet, Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, herbal support, nutritional supplementation and intravenous introduction of high dose Vitamin C.

Dr. Kenyon stated, “Our goal is the attainment and maintenance of the patient’s good health through the creation of balance between mind, body and spirit. Central to this is facilitating and stimulating the body's immune system in the healing process. We believe complementary solutions, that avoid the possible hazards of drug toxicity and side effects, are the way ahead for human health.”

Although alternative therapies such as homeopathy, as used by the Royal family amongst others, are available privately to suitably well-heeled patients, conventional medicine as controlled by the State, has an almost 100% influence in the outcome of cancer patients. This is slowly changing somewhat because of the huge growth experiences in the private insurance market, paid by those who can afford it in addition to their mandatory payments to the National Health Service.

The Dove Clinic is the only facility of its kind operating in the UK. Unfortunately, the official medical (read NHS) attitude is that if conventional medicine cannot fix it, it cannot be fixed.

Being an ex-pat I have had considerable exposure to the NHS system and it is not as system to which American’s should aspire.
